I began to take photography seriously when I was twenty. My first 35mm camera was a Yashica rangefinder. The desire for something more rewarding than snapshots lead me to a darkroom rental facility in Atlanta where I learned to process and print black and white images. My hobby eventually grew to a profession, taking me to Rochester, then Boston, then Ithaca, New York. In 1979, I co-authored and published Coming Into The Light/An Invitation, a book of landscape and nature photographs, with my wife who was also a photographer.
Although I changed careers and began to work as an artist in stained and leaded glass in the 80’s, I continued to teach photography to budding amateurs in adult education classes, and photograph weddings occasionally. Additional changes in career and family over the years have allowed me to stay involved with the arts, but photography has always remained at the core of my creative self.
My greatest inspiration has come from a handful of noted masters. Eliot Porter for his mastery of color and his incredible eye for the landscape. George Tice for his interpretations of the urban landscape and his precise detail. Joel Meyerowitz for his subtlety, richness, and purity. Freeman Patterson for helping me find the heart and soul of creativity through images and for helping me to get to the simple essence.
My images today are purely for the joy of seeing. I shoot what I love, I shoot for pleasure. I shoot my vision of the world, shaped by my experience. The people, the places, the good and the bad, the reality we are presented with everyday filtered through 40 years behind the lens. I am available for assignment, weddings and events.
You may contact me for the purchase of fine art prints of any of my images. My work is also available for editorial or commercial license.
